August 17 -The idea was hailed as a great marketing stunt and over 100 couples applied - but in the end, tradition was the hero of the day and an online bingo sponsored wedding came to a stop.
Online Bingo Club launched a promotion offering couples a wedding worth £5,000 in exchange for prominently displaying the site's logo at the event.
After dozens of applications were received, the lucky couple Matt Brown, 37, and his 28 year old bride Suszanne Latta from Newcastle under Lyme were selected as the winners.
The couple had to promise to display the Online Bingo Club clog on their shoes, wedding outfits, place settings and invitations in exchange for an all expenses paid wedding of their dreams.
Unfortunately, the couple didn't stop to consider that they may meet opposition by the church itself.
Rev. Tony Watts, who officiated the wedding in a church in Ballater, Scotland, decided that he didn't want any form of gambling associated with his church.
As such he ordered that a stop be put to the idea - or the wedding would be called off.
"He didn't approve of gambling being advertised in church," explained the disappointed bride.
The wedding will still be going ahead and while the full sponsorship deal obviously cannot be upheld, it is believed that a compromise will be reached due to the publicity enjoyed by Online Bingo Club as the story appeared in daily tabloids.
"They story was picked up by a lot of nationals, who seems to view it as a classic clash between tradition and commercialism," said the founder of Online Bingo Club, Ron Hutchings. "In the end, it's fair to say that tradition won."
