June 25 - The UK land-based bingo industry is cautiously optimistic as it was
noted on Monday that the government intends making an important announcement
today. Industry analysts predict that the government will allow bingo
halls in the country to increase the number of high revenue slot
machines allowed on site that they have traditionally depended on to increase
their profits.
UK bingo halls have been suffering tremendously under the strain of
oppressive new gambling laws including a double taxation law, a public smoking
law and a cap on the number of 500 Pound jackpot slot machines.
Bingo operators had put three options to authorities to choose from regarding
the slot machines upon which many had come to rely on in order to boost their
revenues and allow them to keep their doors open for business.
The first option - and the one preferable to industry operators - is to link
the number of machines to the size of the bingo halls. There would essentially
be a maximum number of 15 jackpot machines allowed in each bingo hall.
"It makes sense that the number of machines in a hall is related to the
number of players," said one industry source.
The other two options involve allowing 500 Pound machines to make up 20% of
the slot machines in the bingo hall, and, the third, simply allowing up to 15
jackpot machines in each bingo hall.
The last option is one that is the least preferred by industry operators. "If
there were simply a set number of machines everyone could have, it would be open
to abuse," said the industry source. "People would say that they were opening a
bingo club but really it would be just a slots hall."
