UK Bingo Halls Want Smoking Rebate - 09-04-06

UK-owned and operated bingo companies are demanding a multi-million pound tax rebate from the UK government as a way of counteracting the negative effect the recent Scottish smoking ban has had on the profits of bingo halls.

The chairman of the Bingo Association, Sir Peter Fry, told a British newspaper that the smoking ban had caused a dramatic decrease in profits in bingo halls around Scotland, and even resulted in the loss of jobs in some cases.

Leading bingo company, Rank reported that its Mecca chain of bingo halls had experienced a 6% decrease in admissions as well as a 9% drop in average player spend.

The reason for this is that smokers were now forced to take smoking breaks between games, instead of spending money on other traditional bingo hall money-spinners things such as slots and other games.
