Online Bingo Sites Targeted by Kentucky Governor - 09-28-08

September 28 - As the Financial House Committee Chairman, Barney Frank makes moves to bring his UIGEA clarification bill in front of the full house for a vote next week, the state of Kentucky has taken one step backwards with one of the most unbelievable attempts to control internet use.

The Kentucky Governor, Steve Beshear is seeking permission from the civil court to take over the domains of 141 gambling companies that offer their services to Kentucky's casino, poker and bingo players. The move is being made in order to 'protect' the rights of local gambling providers, according to Governor Beshear.

Beshear, who is naturally in full favor of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Law because of the 'evils' of gambling, but conveniently overlooks the fact that the famous Kentucky Derby runs annually in his state and is protected by US federal law, said that "unlicensed, unregulated, illegal internet gambling poses a tremendous threat to the citizens of the Commonwealth because of its ease, availability, and anonymity."

The Governor has raised the wrath of hundreds of online casino and bingo sites with his move to block these domain names. Beshear is already on the road to victory after a court hearing found that there was enough evidence to seize the names and transfer them to the state's account.

Companies, watchdog groups, civil rights organizations and the sites themselves are up in arms over what many call Governor Beshear's crossing of the red line. The Poker Players Alliance issued a scathing attack on the decision, saying that the million-strong group was 'outraged' at the decision.

However, it seems that Governor Beshear is adamant to put a stop to what he terms illegal bingo and casino gambling, and is even targeting bingo software provider sites such as Microgaming in a bid to end the threat to local charity and state lottery companies.
