May 13 - What should have been the happiest time in their lives after a
60,000 GBP bingo windfall has seen a UK family torn apart after
the husband - a bingo fraudster - was sent to jail for a year.
Forty year old Ian Winter, a father of four, decided that it was too tempting
to tell income authorities about the win and instead continued to receive dole
support, claiming that he could not work because of poor health.
But instead of making an effort to look for alternative employment, the bingo
fraudster was too busy spending the 60,000 GBP prize money. In the short time
that he had to enjoy the cash, Winter and his wife, Tracey, took? vacations
to hot destinations around the globe and spent some of the money on luxury
items.
But, as in all cases, crime simply does not pay, and an anonymous tip-off
sent authorities to check on whether Winter was indeed too ill to work. Within a
short time, it was discovered that the handyman preferred to continue sponging
off the UK dole system and spending his wife's bingo winnings, instead of
working.
He was arrested and charged with fraud and last week a judge sent Winter off
to jail for a year.
Tracey Winter was not happy about the decision, to say the least. She ranted
outside the court room after the ruling and exclaimed: "You see people stealing
much more money from the social and just getting community service. Ian has
never done anything wrong before. I can't believe it. The judge was in a bad
mood because he didn't have a red chair and had to put up with a blue one
instead. I think he took his frustrations out on Ian."
