April 22 - A GBP 50,000 bingo jackpot has become the talk of the town, after
a controversial court ruling.
The story began eighteen months ago when bingo sisters, Doreen Thomas,
Linda Kenny, and Edna Sexton played their favorite game at their local Gala bingo
hall. The sisters had a long-standing oral agreement that any winnings were
split evenly, and this had been upheld in two previous wins of GBP 1000 each in
past years.
When Sexton won the GBP 50,000 jackpot that night, everyone was ecstatic
until the next day when she suddenly changed her mind and refused to keep her
end of the bargain. She claimed that the verbal agreement specifically ruled out
splitting winnings over GBP 1000.
Thomas and Kenny were determined to have their day in court and sued for
breach of contract and their share of the money. After hearing all the evidence,
a Liverpool judge ruled in favor of the bingo sisters and demanded that Sexton
pay them each out GBP 17,463 - a third of the bingo windfall plus interest.
Sexton, however, remains defiant in her stand. "If I could get Legal Aid, I'd
appeal the court decision as we have no assets," she said. "We're on benefits so
I don't know where the money will come from." In the days following her
win, Sexton gave away GBP 22,000 to family members as gifts, and spent the rest
on new bedroom furniture, home decorations and a trip-of-a-lifetime to Las
Vegas. She also blew a fifth of her money on court expenses.
Her sister, Doreen Thomas said, "At least we had a victory and can say we are
entitled to the money, if nothing else. But we won't be celebrating. Me and
Linda have spent GBP 10,000 on court costs and it's been a terrible strain.
Nobody's come out a winner."
